 | | | Nickel Alloys in White Gold
nickelalloy
There are essentially two types of white gold; nickel whites and palladium whites. Nickel Alloys cause allergic reactions in the skin of sensitized people when their salt based human sweat causes a release of the nickel during direct and prolonged contact with the metal.
Although we are not required to, we adhere to the EU nickel directive (94/27/EC). In 1994, the European Union (EU) countries implemented this directive within the Clothing & Jewelry industries to protect nickel-sensitive people when wearing jewelry and metal items that come in contact with their skin (clothing zippers, rivets, watch straps).
The directive requires that parts of jewelry coming in direct and prolonged contact with the skin must have a Nickel Release rate of 0.5 micrograms (or less) per square centimeter per week. Jewelry is tested with a Nickel release test by immersion in a salt solution to stimulate human sweat. All of our 14K and 18K white gold has a Nickel release rate of 0.1 ug/cm2 or less and many of our items are nickel-free.
